Civic Engagement: Thoughts on US healthcare System Vlogs 50 - 73
Fort Lauderdale, FL | As far as my experiences they've been good. "I've had some nightmares, I remember I had a boil under my arm and the doctor was not too caring about it, instead of him numbing my boil under my arm and slicing it he jabbed me in my arm it was painful. That was the first time I've ever stopped a doctor and left out the hospital" Charise.
Minneapolis, MN | "I have chronic back pain and it is really hard for me to even get any kind of pain medication. Now that I got on this new care its like I'm paying for everything. I'm spending $60/$70 a month compared to only spending $12,00" Margaret.
Minneapolis, MN | "I had cataract surgery b4 I was 65! Park Nicollet is where I go & I've had very good healthcare services from them. Keep up the good work, don't cancel any of these programs, we really need them" Sue.
Minneapolis, MN | "She had both her knees and shoulder replacement" Jordon. "They were excellent" Debbie.
Minneapolis, MN | "Its been okay for me for the most part. I have been dropped once in my life that was pretty catastrophic for me" Thomas.
Minneapolis, MN | "I think everyone should have it (health insurance), I think we should go to a single payer system, whereby everyone gets it and administrative cost are 3 or 4%" Roger.
Minneapolis, MN | "In Minnesota I think their kinda of so-so! I had an experience where my mother was in a car accident, took her to the hospital, she made it. She was there talking & she ended up passing" Travoris
Chicago, IL | "I'm living out on the streets for right now. I got high blood pressure, artery disease, defective kidney. My heart beats so fast sometimes I have to take pills to slow it down" Robert.
Chicago, IL | "My experience has been nothing but positive, because of my decision making. I would say to improve healthcare you need to breakdown the ratio of doctors to patients" Richie.
Los Angeles, CA “The system is broken and we can tell that because of the huge health disparities we see with black women. It’s infant health, maternal health, heart disease, cancer, sexually transmitted infections, HIV, etc” Jannette Robinson Flint.
Los Angeles, CA | How is gun violence a health issue? “96 Americans a day are killed by guns. Many more are injured by guns that aren’t even killed. Its a huge epidemic a health crisis. Many are suicides which are preventable” Heather.
Los Angeles, CA | “What we’re doing is we’re making sure that every American regardless of their income, race, demographic, have access to affordable healthcare. We believe that healthcare is a right, not a privilege for the wealthy few” Mica.
Los Angeles, CA “A lot of women are not sure what exactly is covered or how much it cost and the services that are available to them in general…There’s birth control, STI testing and counseling, interpersonal and domestic violence counseling, breast cancer screening etc” Talanie
Los Angeles, CA | “approaching #trauma➕violence, not by creating more trauma but by healing and restoring what was there before. Transforming the situation so that people are really able to live and be free rather than to experience more…” Addison
Boston, MA | “I’ve seen good, bad & ugly. Some of them are horrendous. The way you’re treated, thats the biggest thing for me. If you have more cooperative #patients, then you a more flowing smooth system, I believe. It comes down to the patients & their comfortability in your establishment. If their not comfortable in your establishment or they don’t feel that they are being treated properly, they are not going to act accordingly” Peter.
Cleveland, OH “I volunteered in the Emergency Room—one trend that I noticed was when nurses would treat patients differently had to do with people showing withdrawal symptoms. So, anybody that came in that was jittery that kinda looked amped or looked like they were going through withdrawal would kinda get bumped down the list in terms of people that were taken care of” Tanaka.
Cleveland, OH | “Thoughts about the #healthcare here in #Cleveland: Its not too good, its not too bad. They only give you enough that they feel is satisfying you. Its kind of like if you try to get your own its expensive, so its like you’re in a lose-lose situation. Especially when you have kids, and you need medicine for your kids. Some kids get #asthma and other things of that nature”Anthony
Cleveland, OH | “I have had family members that have dealt with certain situations and you just hear stories all the time of people who can’t afford services or healthcare for their children who have no choice in the matter. I don’t think thats fair to a lot of people” Anthony
Cleveland, OH | “I think it needs some work, theres a lot of opportunities for increasing benefits and better benefits in general” Chloe 💬 “I think there’s a lot of hurdles. There are people who refuse to go get treated for things that they should get treated for because of the hurdles” Chase.
Cleveland, OH | “I have a lot of tiffs with healthcare in the U.S. I believe it should be universal healthcare and that it shouldn’t cost so much. If someone has cancer that they shouldn’t have to spend a fortune in order to live and have #chemotherapy & #radiation. My mom had breast cancer and if we didn’t have the type of insurance that we have right now we would of had to sell our house” Virginia.
Cleveland, OH | "I’m a mental health nurse, so I think we have lots of opportunities to improve mind, body, spirit in how we care for the whole person, as well as the mental health of the people we see. As we’ve grown in our Electronic Health Records EHR its pulled us away from our #patients and families so I think the complexity is around, how do we continue to sit at the bedside and care for the people we really care for verses needing to document things we need to document" Nicole, RN.
Cleveland, OH | “A lot of times it all comes down to cost whereas, the doctor tailors the treatment to the cost based on health coverage” Jacob.
